The lyrics of Currency consistently dread a number of extant paradigms in today’s world, including approaches towards finding meaning in life. This piece is inspired by a melancholic phase that many nonbinary individuals endure during which one begins to fear that all forms of affirmation towards their gender identity are solely a means of communicating that identity to strangers and peers alike, rather than something primarily for them to enjoy alone—that the pleasure of expressing their gender has grown into a chore. In Currency, this dread is alleviated by a close connection the protagonist has with their friend or love interest who always recognizes their identity without a need for outward expression.
